Hosokawa designs survival plan

Equipment for processing filler minerals has been hit by the global downturn, as recession squeezes demand for raw materials and credit dries up for investment. But has German processing company, Hosokawa, engineered a way out of the downturn? And what does it mean for industrial mineral producers and consumers?

Despite the downturn which has hit demand for filler minerals, Hosokawa still unveiled its largest long gap (LGM) mill last month which is particularly aimed at drying and coating industrial minerals such as carbon black, gypsum, iron oxide, precipitated calcium carbonate, pigments and titanium dioxide (see IM 27 April ’09: Hosokawa unveils its largest LGM).

After the unveiling, IM interviewed vice president Bertram Brenner, technical manager Lothar Wörle, and LGM product manager Rolf Schatz about the state of the fillers market and how innovation and product diversity might plug the holes in demand.
