Galaxy leads lithium surge

Asian and South America lithium supply activity continues unabated as Galaxy secures Shanghai plant input materials by Simon Moores, Senior Asst Editor

Australian newcomer, Galaxy Resources Ltd, is now awaiting an injection of cash to finance its goal to develop lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) from spodumene. Since last month’s signing of a letter of intent for its 17,000 tpa Li2CO3 plant in the Yangtze River International Chemical Industrial Park outside of Shanghai, China, Galaxy has wasted no time is securing the utilities for the facility. The company has secured a 40,000 tpa supply of soda ash, with Jiangsu Huachang Chemical Co. Ltd, and a 38,000 tpa sulphuric acid supply deal with local producer Two Lions (Zhangjiagang) Fine Chemicals Co. Ltd.  The 15 year deal with Two Lions also includes supply of sodium hydroxide and steam as an energy source.
