Latin American potash promise

With the world’s requirements for food and other crops set to rise in line with population growth, the industry has speculated that the fertiliser sector “will be at the heart of humanity’s greatest challenges over the 21st century” (see IM May ’09, p.62: Potash tunnel vision). Demand may currently be down for fertiliser minerals, but potash appears to be weathering 2009 better than its phosphate and sulphur counterparts by maintaining healthy prices of C$700-800/tonne ($620-705/tonne). Further, the opinion among industry leaders is that the low demand is very much short term (1 year), and this has been supported by announcements of capacity increases by leading potash companies Belaruskali, and PotashCorp. of Saskatchewan Inc. Recent acquisitions also mean that new potash supply may be coming on to the market...
