Australia’s kaolin rush

Australia exports some 200,000 tpa kaolin at present. This is expected to significantly increase over the next few years as several developers look to bring on stream their projects. Yet another player has emerged with hopes to pursue export markets for kaolin: gold developer Mutiny Gold is evaluating the potential of developing a kaolin co-product at its White Well Gold Project in Western Australia (see “New Australian kaolin prospect” – IM Online News 26 May 2009). Mutiny’s proposed mining programme calls for the extraction of over 5m. tonnes of “kaolin material” over three years. In its report, Mutiny described kaolin as a “10m. tpa, A$4,000m. (US$3,099m.) measured export industry”. Mutiny, based in South Perth, Western Australia, is evaluating the potential of developing a kaolin co-product at its White Well Gold Project, located 30km east of Cue in the Tuckabianna Mineral Field in Western Australia’s Murchison Goldfields.
