Chromite prices higher in Q3

Rand strength and production cuts firm Q3 chromite prices as non-met. shortage looms

Despite the still tentative demand for non-metallurgical grades of chromite, used in refractory, chemical, and foundry applications, have told IM that prices for the coming quarter have been maintained at higher levels owing to the ongoing strengthening of the Rand and production cuts by leading South African producers.

Suppliers of chromite have quoted prices of chemical grade chromite (46%, Cr2O3, FOB Transvaal wet bulk) at $210-230/tonne, compared to $155-185/tonne in May.

Prices for foundry grades (46% Cr2O3, FOB Transvaal, wet bulk) are quoted at $250-260/tonne, and for refractory grades at $395/tonne. Prices were over...
