UK salt demand doubles

Imports loom as 1m. tonnes de-icing salt used within five weeks in extreme weather

The UK has consumed a year’s worth of salt within the space of five weeks as it struggles to come to grips with an extreme bout of weather.

 

In an average year, the UK’s roads will consume 1m. tpa of de-icing salt, but since December 2009 this figure has doubled to 2m. tpa with demand continuing to soar.
