US minerals slump in 2009

Total value drops 20% to $57.1bn as USA increases reliance on imports

The value of non-fuel minerals mined in the USA declined 20% in 2009 to $57.1bn. as the country increased dependence on foreign sources, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

 

The value of materials domestically processed and refined from these raw materials dropped 25% from 2008 levels to $454bn.
