South Korea’s Pohang Iron and Steel Co. (POSCO) has revealed to IM its recent entry into the lithium industry is as much about acquiring different types of sources as it is about securing tonnages of the electric vehicle battery component, lithium carbonate.

“We are in the process of investigating what is the best source of lithium,” explained an authoritative source from the world’s fourth largest steel producer which invested $5m. into Pan American Lithium (PAL) last month.

PAL, which owns an Andean brine resource in Chile and a geothermal project in Mexico, struck a chord with POSCO as it offers two very different types of lithium sources.
