South African mine targets 2012 start up as global rare earth rush continues

Great Western Minerals Group Ltd is targeting production at its Steenkampskraal rare earth project in South Africa during 2012, making it one of the leaders in a huge pack of junior exploration groups.

 

Located in the Western Cape province, the project is a disused thorium mine with a contained resource of 30,000 tonnes total rare earth oxides (REO), the Canadian group said.

Great Western and its partner, Rare Earth Extraction Co. Ltd of Stellenbosch (Rareco), have applied for a renewed mining licence, with the aim of starting production at 2,500 tpa...
