Rockwood Pigments, of the USA, has developed a new generation of colour pigments utilising a blend of iron oxide and titanium dioxide which have functional properties that respond to sunlight. This action enables surfaces to self-clean, reduce air pollutants, and inhibit microbial growth.

The new pigment, called Solarox™, is claimed by Rockwood to be the first coloured pigment of its kind with photocatalytic properties.
