Indias Trimex Group plans to invest over $800m. on a titanium project in Indonesia, utilising resources from mineral sand deposits in the South East Asian country.
Trimex plans a three-phase project, including an ilmenite mine and separation plant, along with titanium dioxide (TiO2) and titanium metal plants.
The company said it would invest $800-850m. in the project over the next ten years, starting the construction of a $150-200m. TiO2 pigment plant in September 2011.
The plant is expected to start up in December 2013, creating close to 1,000 new jobs, Trimex said.
Indonesia has large ilmenite resources, about 40m. tonnes, despite which, the country annually imports about 46,000 tonnes of TiO2 pigment, said M. S. Hidayat, Indonesias minister of industry.
