Cleveland Potash to exploit UK polyhalite resource

Cleveland Potash Ltd (CPL, a subsidiary of Israel Chemicals Ltd’s (ICL), plans to start producing polyhalite in north-east UK. Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service has approved the merger between potash producers Uralkali and Silvinit.

Cleveland Potash Ltd (CPL, a subsidiary of Israel Chemicals Ltd’s (ICL), plans to start producing polyhalite, a unique mineral salt which is used as a speciality fertiliser, at its existing potash operation at Boulby, in north-east UK.

The project comes as a £15m. ($24.4m.) grant has enabled CPL to progress with a programme to mine and process the mineral. The CPL grant was one of the biggest awards made during the first round of the UK’s Regional Growth Fund programme.

It was made with the goal of creating a significant number of new jobs at the Boulby mine while simultaneously protecting the future of its 850-strong workforce.
