Symphos aims to boost phosphate innovation

Office Cherifien des Phosphates (OCP), one of the world’s leading phosphate producers, launched Symphos: the first international symposium on innovation and technology in the phosphate industry, held in Marrakech last month.

Demand for phosphate keeps increasing as fast-growing economies such as China, India and Brazil have huge needs for fertiliser products. During the last few years, production has dramatically increased and, as regularly reported by IM, numerous projects are now in the pipeline all over the world to significantly boost capacity within the next decade; the main ones being in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Morocco, Peru, and Saudi Arabia.

However, increasing capacity and launching new projects is not the only answer to market demand. The industry also has to overcome changes in order to optimise development of its raw material resources in the future, according to some key players in the sector.
