Global vermiculite prices soar on tight supply

Prices for vermiculite sourced from South Africa have soared in 2011 driven by higher demand and a global shortage in coarse grades, industry sources told IM.

For vermiculite, South Africa, bulk, FOB Antwerp, prices have risen to a range of $400-850/tonne, up from $230-450/tonne at the start of the year.

“We have seen an increase over the last year or two, both from South Africa and for the US sources as well,” a buyer of vermiculite told IM.

Another market source confirmed that “prices have risen not only for South African vermiculite, but across the world”.
