Sensor-based sorting

July 2011

Jens-Michael Bergmann of CommodasUltrasort discusses the latest optical sorting technologies for industrial minerals and outlines investment costs for buyers

While sensor-based sorting (SBS) has been around for many years, its successful application in the recycling industry has elevated it to a position of universal acceptance as a mainstream technology in the sorting industry.

CommodasUltrasort, using its experience in the recycling industry - where several hundred units are operating worldwide on hard and abrasive material in a rough environment - has successfully applied SBS to the industrial minerals environment.

Central to its success in SBS are the company’s optical detection systems, which scan and sort bulk materials between 1 and 300 mm on the basis of colour. This technology has become state of the art in several ore-based industries and is used widely, and with pinpoint accuracy, for pre-concentration of minerals and ores and for the elimination of low-grade or waste materials at an early stage in the beneficiation process.
