Soda ash industry looks to higher prices in 2012

Producers point to glass market growth as demand outstrips supply

Burgeoning demand and rising energy costs have led to higher soda ash prices globally. This, in turn, has led to some producers adjusting their 2012 outlook as the market continues to tighten.

“For 2012, at least in Europe, we are going to have a real shortage of soda ash,” one European producer divulged to IM.

“The price increase is estimated to be more than €25/tonne.”

The price of soda ash (synthetic, dense and light, small parcels, list price, ex works Europe) is between €195-235/tonne, ($276.36-333.15) up from €170-200/ tonne last year. If the price increase is implemented it would put the price between €220-260/tonne.

The price of soda ash (European synthetic, dense and light, large contracts, ex works) meanwhile is priced between €165-185/tonne, up from €150-170/tonne level...
