Lithium consumption is expected to rise 15.5% in 2011, reaching 120,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE), Daniela Desormeaux, general manager of the SignumBOX consultancy, told IM.

Referring to a new SignumBOX analysis report – Lithium, Batteries and Vehicles: Perspectives and Trends – Desormeaux outlined how niche markets, as well as electric vehicles, will contribute to the increased demand.

“The use of lithium in batteries excluding batteries for cars is estimated to rise 18% in 2011,” Desormeaux forecast. “We believe that the use of lithium in frits and enamels would require around 33,200 tonnes LCE, 15% more than our estimation for 2010.”
