Brussels wants to better protect industrial minerals workers from radiation

The European Commission has proposed interdicting mandatory radiation protection controls for workers at risk of exposure to natural radiation emitted during a wide range of industrial mineral processing activities.

The move comes in a major review of European Union (EU) radiation protection legislation, resulting in Brussels tabling a revised directive “laying down basic safety standards for protection against the dangers arising from exposure to ionising radiation.”

This suggests, for the first time, that EU member states must ensure radiation protection for workers involved in the mining of all kinds of ores (those handling uranium already were protected by EU law).
