Mytilineos buys off S&B assets, questions non-met. future of Greek bauxite source

The future supply of Greek bauxite for non-metallurgical  (non-met) markets has been brought into question with last week’s deal between S&B Industrial Minerals SA and Mytilineos Holdings SA.

 

Greek bauxite and bentonite producer S&B announced on 8 November 2011 that Mytilineos Holdings SA is set to “gradually acquire” S&B’s bauxite arm over the next 30 months.

 

The acquisition will provide Mytilineos’s aluminium subsidiary, Aluminium SA (ASA), with security of bauxite supply for its alumina plant at Aspra Spitia Voiotias.

 

This begs the question: Will any of the former S&B bauxite remain supplying non-metallurgical markets?

 

Some 40% of S&B’s bauxite output has historically been sold to non-met uses, mainly calcium aluminate cement (CAC)....
