Flat glass industry particularly affected; research into zirconium substitutes

The rising price of cerium and neodymium has led to end users finding ways to prolong use of the material and a fall off in consumption, Jai Subramanian, global business manager for Ferro Corp. said on Thursday.The US-based company told delegates at the 7th International Rare Earths Conference in Hong Kong that consumption of cerium had fallen quite dramatically in polishing applications.Polishing is the largest end use for cerium, but companies are using less and less of the mineral because of cost pressures, he said."In flat glass the market has diminished significantly this year.
