Cristal plans Saudi Ti-slag plant for 2013

Cristal Global is planning to build a 500,000 tpa titanium slag operation in Saudi Arabia which could double capacity if the market required, the company told delegates at last month’s TZMI Congress in Hong Kong.

Cristal Global is planning to build a 500,000 tpa titanium slag operation in Saudi Arabia which could double capacity if the market required, the company told delegates at last month’s TZMI Congress in Hong Kong.

The unit will be able to process 800,000 tpa of ilmenite into 500,000 tpa high grade slag titanium dioxide (TiO2) feedstock, vice president Thomas Van Valkenburgh said during his presentation.

It will also produce 235,000 tpa of pig iron as a by product.

The project will be ready for commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2013, Van Valkenburgh said. Construction of the plant will start in the second quarter of 2012 and the mechanics will begin in October 2013.
