Growing demand in salt industry causes concern as stockpiles low

A year is a long time in the salt industry. Adverse weather conditions have impacted on stockpiles in Australia, India and the US, while demand remains strong for de-icing and chemical applications.

A total of 260m tpa of salt is produced worldwide, Salt Partners, providers of information on the salt industry, outlined this week during a presentation to the soda ash industry. Of this figure, 100m tpa is solar salt, 80m is rock salt and 80m is brines.

In 2010 the US produced 45m tpa of salt, China 60m tpa, Germany 16m tpa, India 15.8m tpa (but the harvest is expected to be lower this year due to flooding) and Canada 14m tpa, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
