Industry looks to expand as supply tightens, but energy costs bite

The year 2011 saw a great deal of new beginnings in the soda ash industry, from new projects planned in various regions, to new synergies between companies working in different areas.

Prices were increased and demand also as energy costs began to bite and supply was interrupted in the US and in India.

In January, Saudi Arabia’s IDEA International Co. announced that it will build the region’s first synthetic soda ash and calcium chloride operation in Jubail. The plant will produce 500,000 tpa of soda ash and 575,000 tpa of calcium chloride in the first phase of the project. It will be ready for...
