Project investment and expansions underway; S&B marks end of a bauxite era

With recovery in markets, new and established bauxite and alumina players have been driven to bring on projects and expand capacities.

Canada’s First Bauxite Corp. closed the first part of a two tranche financing deal with US private investor Resource Capital Funds (RCF). The first tranche represents a value of C$8m ($7.8m) to further fund the development of its non-metallurgical Bonasika bauxite project in Guyana, South America.

Hellenic Mining Enterprises SA (Elmin), Greece, strengthened its already well-established position in the non-metallurgical, non-refractory bauxite supply market with plans for production of 530,000 tonnes, up from 420,000 tonnes in 2010.

Bosai Minerals Group of Chongqing, China, significantly expanded its brown fused alumina (BFA) capacity with a 10,000 tpa upgrade of its Guangxi BFA plant in addition to the acquisition of BFA producer Guizhou Kaifeng Mining Co. Ltd. The two upgrades will increase Bosai’s BFA capacity to...
