Global steel production rose 6.8% in 2011 driven by China

Turkey, South Korea and Italy show robust growth; signs of slowdown at year-end

Global steel production increased 6.8% in 2011 as China continued to drive global growth, statistics from the World Steel Association (worldsteel) showed.

The 64 countries assessed by worldsteel produced 1.527bn tonnes of crude steel in 2011, compared with 1.430bn tonnes in 2010.

All major steel-producing countries with the exception of Japan and Spain increased output in 2011, with Turkey, South Korea and Italy showing the most robust growth.
