Mineral market specialists are calling for the US government to step up investment and support for the country’s rare earth mining industry to prevent the country losing out on developing important green technologies to competing countries like China.

The comments follow Tuesday’s State of the Union address from US president Barack Obama, where he emphasised the importance of developing energy sources that prevent the US from being dependent on foreign resources – both solar energy and wind energy use rare earths.

Yet rare earth experts warn that any potential strategies in this area are bound to fail unless the US government comes up with a proactive plan to drastically expand the country’s rare earth mining sector.
