The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded engineers at Washington University in St Louis $2m to design a battery management system for lithium-ion batteries that will guarantee their longevity, safety and performance.
The project is one of 19 that won funding from the DOEs Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) under a new programme designed to promote innovation in battery management and storage.
The ultimate goals of the programme include the development of electric vehicle technologies, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the electrical grid and potentially improving access to energy for the US military operating in remote areas.
