SQM sees iodine prices rise 70% since 2011; profits up 45%

Iodine supply tight but prices to stabilise in H2; lithium volumes to increase

Chile’s SQM (Sociedad Quimica y Minera) said it had seen sales and profits increase across all its business lines in the second quarter of 2012, with iodine and industrial chemicals among the top performers.

Patricio Contesse, SQM CEO, said that the results were “as [SQM] expected,” with the group seeing a positive influence from the sale of volumes delayed from the first quarter of 2011, and that the company’s results as a whole “reflect the positive trend of 2012”.

The company reported a rise of 45.4% in net profits for the second quarter of 2012 compared with the same period in 2011.

Total revenue for the quarter was $683m, with a net margin of $192.2m for April to June, compared with $551.7m and $132.2m...
