Shipping rates firm as Australia’s ports look to open after bad weather

Dry bulk industrial mineral shipping rates firmed this week after the worst of Australia’s cyclone Rusty passed the country’s main iron ore export ports, although there was still some risk of flooding in mining areas.

The shipping market was also optimistic on Chinese demand for steel-making feedstock, with the outlook indicating more demand from the world’s largest iron ore importer.

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) was 745 on 27 February compared with 735 on 20 February. Capesize, Panamax, Supramax, and Handysize indices were 1,264, 961, 745, and 426 respectively....
