The storage and remediation of bauxitic red mud waste will be an increasing challenge for the global alumina industry, as stockpiles approach 3bn m3, with a further 1bn m3 of material expected to accumulate by 2020, according to Ron Knapp, secretary general of the International Aluminium Institute.
