California-based Envia Systems has developed new lithium-ion (Li-on) battery technology which it claims can significantly increase energy density of automotive batteries.

Envia, financed by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and General Motors business GM Ventures, said the development could also sharply reduce the costs of battery packs.
