Administrators close Penrice sodium bicarbonate, lime, plant

The closure of the Osborne plant is of course bad news for Penrice, but it also highlights the tough economic landscape facing Australian miners. This year Galaxy Resources closed its Mt Cattlin spodumene mine and plant, citing high operating costs.

Australian soda ash, bicarbonate of soda and limestone producer Penrice Soda Holdings Ltd has relinquished its Osborne chemical plant to administrators after a prospective bidder backed out.

The chemical plant will cease operations immediately, with only a small number of staff retained to decommission it safely.
