China orders capacity closures; US funds research into rare earth-free motors; Northern receives Macquarie grant

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has ordered local governments to close and destroy about 100,000 tonnes of rare earth oxide production capacity before the end of 2014.
