UK cannot afford to abandon mining, experts warn

The nation has a long history of mining, but has largely given up the development of its mineral resources over the last century as it became cheaper to import from international suppliers. The UK Minerals Forum Working Group has argued that mineral supply security cannot be taken for granted, however, and urged decision makers make plans for exploiting domestic reserves.

The UK will need to continue accessing newly extracted domestic minerals under any future economic scenario to 2050, a report by the UK Minerals Forum has warned.
