Albemarle steps up lithium carbonate presence in Chile

The chemicals company, which recently took over the US’ largest lithium producer, Rockwood Holdings, said it expects to produce commercial quantities of lithium carbonate from its brine processing site in La Negra this year, before ramping up in 2016 to keep pace with accelerating demand for the energy mineral.

Albemarle Corp. has started commissioning a 20,000 tpa lithium carbonate plant at its La Negra site in northern Chile, near Antofagasta, with first commercial production slated for Q3 this year.
