Frac Sand 2015: Frac sand logistics go into reverse

A surge in orders for rail cars at the height of the fracking boom in 2014 has created an oversupply situation in freight capacity, with lease rates cut in half and a backlog of newly made cars following the collapse of the oil price and consequent frac sand demand.

Logistics are driving companies’ ability to compete in the silica (frac) sand sector, in a situation of proppant quality versus landed economics, delegates at IM’s 3rd Frac Sand Conference in Minnesota, US, heard this week.
