Maharashtra toughens stance on illegal sand mining

District administrators in the Indian state of Maharashtra have outlined plans to set up committees tasked with preventing the illegal extraction of sand from rivers.

Illegal beach sand miners will face stricter penalties in Maharashtra, a state in the southwest coastal belt of India, as the local government has directed district administrators to seize and auction vehicles used to transport the sand.
