Aluminium ’16: Refractory makers eye niche markets

Refractory producers have been hit by the downturn in aluminium demand as much as they have in steel and cement, and are pursuing smaller but growing applications including power generation, chemicals or glass that offer more lucrative business opportunities.

The slowdown in global economies that led to a slump in demand for steel has affected aluminium and cement alike, meaning refractory makers have had to seek to strengthen their presence in other better-performing end markets, IM heard at the Aluminium 2016 trade show in Dusseldorf, Germany.
