US alumina production drops 45% in 2016

The closure of Alcoa’s site in Point Comfort and Sherwin Alumina’s plant in Corpus Christi hit alumina production capacity in the country hard in 2016, while it also affected imports of bauxite.

Alumina production in the US dropped 45% to 2.5m tonnes in 2016, while volumes of bauxite imported for internal consumption saw a similar decrease, according to the latest report released by the USGS.
