SQM to close water extraction wells in the Salar de Llamara on environmental order

The Environmental Court of Antofagasta has ordered SQM to temporarily close part of its seven water extraction wells in the Salar de Llamara of Chile.

The water extraction wells are used in the production of iodine and extract 124 liters of water per second.

The suspension may hit the company's plan to reach 14,000 tonnes per year of iodine production capabilities [by 2018] under construction alongside and increase production costs, SQM said.
