FRAC SAND 2018: Covia idles 3.3 million short tpy of frac sand mining capacity

US frac sand giant Covia has reduced its out-of-basin frac sand capacity, calling it a “necessary step,” even as it plans to ramp up in-basin capacity.

Covia, North America’s largest producer of frac sand, is idling 3.3 million short tons per year of capacity, even as it ramps up production elsewhere, in order to preserve what it calls its "leading cost position."
