MEIS 2018: GCC countries turn to protectionism to defend steel industry against Section 232

Speakers at Fastmarkets MB’s Middle East Iron and Steel event stressed the urgency of shielding local steelmakers from the knock-on effects of the United States’ Section 232 tariffs although over the longer term GCC industries must find ways to become more competitive.

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are not averse to using protectionist measures to defend the regional steel industry against the knock-on effects of United States’ Section 232 tariffs, speakers said at the annual Middle East Iron and Steel conference in Dubai on December 10-12.
