Fastmarkets IM today launches six graphite-flake price assessments to improve its coverage of the global graphite market:

Following an initial one-month consultation period and a one-month extension to that consultation, Fastmarkets IM is launching the following price assessments:
  • Graphite flake, 94%, +100 mesh, cif Europe, $/tonne
  • Graphite flake, 94%, +80 mesh, cif Europe, $/tonne
  • Graphite flake, 94%, -100 mesh, cif Europe, $/tonne
  • Graphite flake, 94%, +100 mesh, fob China, $/tonne
  • Graphite flake, 94%, +80 mesh, fob China, $/tonne
  • Graphite flake, 94%, -100 mesh, fob China, $/tonne

The launch of these new assessments comes alongside the discontinuation of the following six graphite flake assessments, as stipulated in the consultation process.

  • Graphite Flake, 94-97% C, +100 Mesh -80 Mesh, FCL, cif Europe [US$ per tonne]
  • Graphite Flake, 94-97% C, +80 Mesh, FCL, cif Europe [US$ per tonne]
  • Graphite Flake, 94-97% C, -100 Mesh, FCL, cif Europe [US$ per tonne]
  • Graphite Flake, 94-97% C,+100 Mesh -80 Mesh, FCL, fob Qingdao, China [US$ per tonne]
  • Graphite Flake, 94-97% C, +80 Mesh, FCL, fob Qingdao, China [US$ per tonne]
  • Graphite Flake, 94-97% C, -100 Mesh, FCL, fob Qingdao, China [US$ per tonne]

By assessing solely 94% C material - rather than a carbon range of 94-97% C - the specifications will be aligned with the most liquid products within the graphite market. This is in response to market participant feedback.

At the same time, to ensure that subscribers can access assessments for grades other than 94%, a Value-In-Use calculator (VIU) will be introduced that will allow users to estimate the equivalent price for different carbon content materials, ranging from 95% to 97%.

The change to this assessment is part of a wider improvement to Fastmarkets IM’s pricing of the graphite flake market.

Fastmarkets IM has additionally discontinued the following two graphite flake and three graphite amorphous price assessments:

  • Graphite Flake, 85-87% C,+100 Mesh -80 Mesh, FCL, fob Qingdao, China [US$ per tonne]
  • Graphite Flake, 90% C, -100 Mesh, FCL, fob Qingdao, China [US$ per tonne]
  • Graphite Amorphous, 78% C, No Mesh Stated, fob China [US$ per tonne]
  • Graphite Amorphous, 80% C, -100 Mesh, fob China [US$ per tonne]
  • Graphite Amorphous, 85% C, -100 Mesh, fob China [US$ per tonne

Fastmarkets made this decision based on an internal assessment and feedback from the market that found these grades carry little liquidity and do not serve the needs of the industry at present, compared with other more widely traded grades.

All historical data relating to these prices will remain available in the pricing section of the Fastmarkets IM website.
