Chinese brown fused alumina producers shift to white on evolving market dynamics

Amid muted demand, environmental crackdowns and increasingly short supply of high-grade feedstock, producers are seeking changes to their operations in Henan province, a production hub for brown fused alumina (BFA).

Historically, the price of refractory grade white fused alumina (WFA) has been higher than that of brown fused alumina (BFA) due to the high aluminium oxide (alumina) content and the cost of the Bayer metallurgical alumina feedstock, But this trend in refractory grade alumina prices flipped in 2019.
