LITHIUM 2021: Automakers to use both carbonate and hydroxide formulae; address sustainability

Automakers will continue to use both lithium hydroxide and carbonate in their batteries going forward, but end consumer decisions will be driven by the sustainability profile of final products, according to market experts speaking at Fastmarkets' Lithium Supply & Markets conference 2021 in Las Vegas.

In 2021, demand for lithium carbonate and hydroxide showed "unprecedented growth," Ashish Patki from Livent said. Livent is a United States-headquartered lithium producer that caters for German automotive company BMW.
